How to Permanently Delete Data from PC?

The first point you may not believe is that the deleted data didn’t disappear as you thought, they are still on your hard drive or SSD, and they can be recovered via some tech skills like data recovery applications or CMD.

So, your personal data might leak out accidentally, if the data is a little sensitive such as business data, family information, records of consumption, etc., then things will get worse.

Why those deleted files didn’t disappear? If they’re still here, why you can’t find them? Where are they?

Why your deleted data can be recovered?

  1. About delete files

The new hard disk must be partitioned and formatted before use. The formatting operation is to divide the hard disk into “regions”, and different regions store different data.

After formatting, the hard disk will automatically generate “directory region”(DIR) and “data region”(DATA), and “DATA” is the storage location of the data and other information.

When you choose to delete a file, the system actually just sets a status flag that records the status of the file in the “DIR” as “delete”, thus the system knows that this occupied area is already free now.

If the user needs to store the new file, the system can allocate this free space to the new file, if not, the “deleted file” still exists in the hard disk.

  1. Where are those deleted files?

Those deleted files are still in the original location.

When you need your computer to execute the delete operation to some files on the hard disk, the files are not really erased. System won’t delete data of files, only directory info has been deleted. It’s like a book, you remove some pages of the catalog, but those stories are still there. You can build new catalog pages based on the contents.

  1. About data recovery

As we mentioned in the previous question, if those directory data can be recovered, then the system can find the location data, your “deleted” files will be back.

Nowadays, there are various data recovery tools. They can find and rebuild the “catalog” of those files to let the system find the location of “deleted” files. Therefore, your deleted files are retrieved.

How to permanently delete data from PC?

If you’re thinking about formatting, well, formatting is the same as deleting. Your data still faces the risk of recovery.

How do you permanently delete data from your computer? Are there any possible methods to protect our privacy? Of course! Since people pay more and more attention to defending personal data disclosure, the demand for file erasure software is also increasing.

In this post, we recommend you a multifunctional partition software—AOMEI Partition Assistant Professional. This powerful software can wipe your hard drive and partitions with four methods: “Fill sectors with Zero”, “Fill sectors with random data”, “DoD 5220.22-M” and “Gutmann”.

DoD 5220.22-M: Published in Department of Defense of the U.S. The target files will be rewritten 7 times; even a professional data recovery laboratory is also difficult to recover.

Gutmann: Overwrite 35 times, repeatedly destroy the contents of the file, the probability of recovery is basically equal to 0.

You can flexibly select the best method according to your requirements.

If you only need to wipe one partition and keep other drives, AOMEI Partition Assistant has “Wipe partition” function to execute wipe on the specified partition.

Then, what if you’re using an SSD? Don’t worry, this application has “SSD Secure Erase” feature to securely wipe your privacy on the SSD without hurting it. It supports all common brands: Intel, Samsung, Kingston, SanDisk…

What’s more, this professional disk manager allows you to:

  1. Resize/Merge/Delete/Format/Split partitions: Users can adjust the size of partitions to release more free space on any partition (this is really practical for crowded C drive.) and disks.
  2. Clone Wizard: Users can clone the entire disk or any partitions if they need to make a backup or for other reasons.
  3. Defragment HDD: Defragment is good maintenance for HDD to keep its nice performance.
  4. Move programs without reinstallation: Users can transfer any big programs or games from one drive to another and boot them as before without reinstalling.
  5. Convert file system and partition styles between MBR and GTP: FAT32 or NTFS, MBR or GPT, users can run convert functions to manage disks and partitions.
  6. Migrate OS to SSD: It allows users to transfer their own OS to other devices with no need to reinstall the system.
  7. Partition Alignment: This feature is specifically developed to improve the reading and writing speeds of your disk, including both Hard Disk Drive (HDD) and Solid State Drive (SSD).

AOMEI Partition Assistant Professional optimizes disk efficiency and relieves customers from data security concerns.

Now, let’s see detailed steps about how to permanently delete data from PC.

3 Steps to wipe HDD

Step 1. Select a hard drive that you want to wipe; right-click on it and choose the “Wipe Hard Drive” option.

Step 2. Choose a wiping method to wipe the selected hard drive according to your requirements and click “OK”.

Step 3. Click “Apply” in the toolbar to execute the operation.

The steps of wiping a partition is almost the same as wiping a disk, you just need to choose “Wipe Partition” features, the other 2 steps are the same.

SSD secure erase

  1. Please prepare a computer installed with Windows 7 operating system. As with all software, this feature is blocked by Windows 8/8.1 and Windows 10 operating systems.
  2. It runs better when connected directly from a SATA port.

Step 1. In the left menu of AOMEI Partition Assistant, click “SSD Secure Erase Wizard” and click “Next”. Or, right-click on the SSD and select “SSD Secure Erase”.

Step 2. Select the SSD that you want to securely erase and click “Next”.

Step 3. Check the SSD identification information in case of erasing the wrong SSD because the data is unrecoverable after the Erase. You will see the SSD is in a frozen state. To continue, you need to perform a hot-swap

Step 4. click “Next” to start the SSD Secure Erase.

With AOMEI Partition Assistant Professional, disk management is no longer complex work for all users. Your disks, data, and partitions will be protected by this software. By the way, this helpful application can also recover missing partitions.

In all, you can rely on this versatile tool to improve the performance of disks and guard the safety of your personal data.
