How To Stay Productive While Working From Home

Technology has revolutionized the way people work and one of them is the ability to work remotely from the comfort of your home. Working from home has its perks: you save on transportation costs, avoid traffic madness that is common in most cities, and work at your own convenience.

It’s not all rosy though because you can find your productivity plummeting while working from home. This is because homes are not designed for work; they are built and furnished with only your comfort and entertainment in mind. So it may be difficult to get any work done there unless you make some changes. Follow these tips to stay productive while working from home.

Be in the right frame of mind

While you can wake up when you want and whenever you feel like as long as you deliver on your targets, you still need to have a working schedule.

Wake up in time and get off your pajamas. No, it’s not a license to work in your birthday suit either. Wear at least something that would pass on a casual Friday or a normal day at a tech company. You don’t want to be scrambling or rushing for your wardrobe when the Skype call comes in.

Take your breakfast as you would if you were going to the office and sit down for work.

Work from a desk

Even if you can’t have a specific room for your home office, at least have a chair and desk where you can work comfortably. Working from your bed or the living room couch will not only hurt your back but also lower your productivity.

You are likely to fall asleep or watch the TV. Moreover, your mind has been conditioned to link the bed with relaxation and sleep and you will find hard to focus on the job at hand.

Avoid distractions

The trick is to act as if you are in the office. So don’t receive any visitors during your working hours. The TV should also be switched off and keep off your phone. Watching the TV or scrolling down your social media feeds even for a few minutes can disrupt your working rhythm and it will take time before you get your concentration back on track.

If you have a baby or young kids, hire a nanny or preoccupy them with safe toys rather than your laptop but keep checking up on them.

Stock up on office supplies

The downside of working from home is you have to double up as the office administrator. It is therefore your responsibility to make sure you have everything you need to work productively with minimal disruptions.

So stock up on enough pens, markers, notebooks and staple pins from staplegunreviews.com and any other item you may need for your work.

Additionally, you can also invest in a quality office chair (if you don’t have one already). Most home furniture are not designed for long hours of sitting in front of a computer.

  1. It’s pretty hard to stay concentrated at home. I prefer to listen to jazz and classical music while working. That really helps.
