What to Monitor

PRTG Network monitors everything from cloud services, VMware, Hyper-V, hardware, printers, CPU, memory, hard drive, network and network traffic, servers, lan, IP, netflow, bandwidth, server room, routers, workstations, wifi, snmp, network mappings, firewall, backups, updates, databases, uptime, VoiP, active directory, ping, wmi, cisco, syslog, applications, ports, packets, iis, NTP, jFlow, SQL, Windows Server, CDN, Linux, web hosting, mail servers, IP SLA, storage, SSL, remote, SAN, NAS, Sharepoint, VPN, humidity, ftp, switches, and so much more.

PRTG monitors all types of systems, devices and applications in your IT infrastructure:

  • SNMP: Ready to use and with customization options
  • Windows and WMI performance counters
  • SSH: For Linux / Unix and MacOS systems
  • Flow and Packet analyzer
  • HTTP requests
  • Any REST API that returns XML or JSON
  • Ping, SQL and many more

One server is required to deploy PRTG Network Monitor on the network.  Installed will be a proprietary database, web server, report engine, notification system, and other features required for the system to function.  PRTG Network Monitor does not require any client agents, making installation quite easy.

All that is needed are log-in credentials for each device and the configuration settings.   PRTG ‘s web app allows admins to monitor from any computer browser. They also provide a Windows, Android and iOS app, enabling you to connect to more than one core server to retrieve monitoring data.

After the installation, PRTG will scan the network and auto-discovery will create sensors that are required to monitor it.  As devices are discovered, probes will also detect the services and hardware it can monitor.

While not all devices may be detectable on the network, remote probes can be installed to communicate back to the server.

PRTG Network Monitor’s auto-discovery function does all the work to find visible devices on your network.

GUI Interface

PRTG Network monitor’s GUI is quite powerful.  It is a solid contender and offering for network monitoring and infrastructure management.  The software offers a hierarchical structure of device views with options to group similar sensors.

Here is an overview of the different sections in the user interface.

Sensors are flexible and can be custom defined as needed.

Notifications give real-time alerts to give you details on issues to prevent issues from becoming worse.  They can inform about errors and warnings, threshold violations, and provide logging details.

PRTG offers different types of notifications such as email, push notifications, SMS, event log, syslog, SNMP trap, execute action/program, ticket assignment, sound alarm and more.

Here is a more in-depth video on customizing notifications.

A comprehensive reporting suite with the ability to design interactive data maps that update automatically is very useful in terms of reporting and can be integrated with other reporting tools such as Scrutinizer by Pflixer.

Paessler PRTG Network Monitor’s licensing is based on sensors.   Between 5-10 sensors are recommended to fully monitor a device.  A freeware edition is available but limited to 100 sensors.

Paessler PRTG Network Monitor is available for a one-time cost of $1,600 for 500 sensors, $2,850 for 1,000 sensors, and $14,500 for unlimited sensors.
