Attachment size exceeds the allowable limit

Are you getting the “Attachment size exceeds the allowable limit” error when you add a large attachment to an email message in Outlook error when trying to add large attachments in Outlook?

The error “Attachment size exceeds the allowable limit” may occur in various versions of Microsoft Outlook, and common in Outlook 2007, 2010, 2013, and possibly later versions.

This error may be resolved by your administrator by making a change to your network policy, or your company’s exchange server (if applicable) and can also be changed locally by editing the registry.

Microsoft Exchange

If you are on an exchange server and receive this error message, the limit is set in the Transport Settings Properties dialog box in Exchange.

Outlook 2007

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Outlook\Preferences

DWORD value: MaximumAttachmentSize

Unlimited message size uses a value of 0. For a specific message size (recommended) enter the value in Kb. You may want to round the value down to allow for overhead, so for 50MB = 50000.

Outlook 2010

This error appears because Outlook 2012 has an attachment size limite of 20MB.  To increase this limit, make the following change to the registry:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Outlook\Preferences
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Outlook\Preferences

Add the following registry data under this subkey:
DWORD value: MaximumAttachmentSize

Unlimited message size uses a value of 0. For a specific message size (recommended) enter the value in Kb. You may want to round the value down to allow for overhead, so for 50MB = 50000.

Outlook 2013

This error appears because Outlook 2012 has an attachment size limite of 20MB.  To increase this limit, make the following change to the registry:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Outlook\Preferences
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Outlook\Preferences

Add the following registry data under this subkey:
DWORD value: MaximumAttachmentSize

Unlimited message size uses a value of 0. For a specific message size (recommended) enter the value in Kb. You may want to round the value down to allow for overhead, so for 50MB = 50000.
