When it comes time to buying a phone, questions may arise whether to buy a phone with Android or an iPhone, which uses iOS.

There are many feature and price options available when choosing a smartphone.  With Android, the user has to choose between many brands that use Google software and between different price and quality options.  In contrast, choosing iPhone is an easy choice in terms of product line; the models launched to the market by the Apple are few, numbered and classified in with a higher price tag.

Which of the two is better?

Deciding which is better, Android or iPhone is a long time debate.  Many iPhone users and Apple fanboys alike stand by their product no matter how limited Apple makes their storage capacities, while Android geeks have long time been able to freely add storage/memory cards to their devices and take advantage of more powerful hardware.

iOS users may swear on the ease of use of Apple products, while Android users may debate that Apple users just don’t know what they are doing.  These assumptions may neither be the case, other than that pride stands in the way of people’s decision.

The truth is both iPhones and  Android phones have their good and bad points.  It all comes down to a matter of budget and what matters most to you.

Which is known for ease of use?

Apple users often say they love Apple products because they work as they should.  This could be true as Apple software only needs to work on Apple hardware, where Android software needs to work on multiple varieties of devices.

The iOS interface is easy to use, but it really is a matter of preference.  Android can also be easy to use if you get to know it better.  Apple has shown great skill in designing an easy-to-use mobile operating system, while Android has been increasingly developing their product to be more intuitive and give you more control over it’s OS and applications.  Most geeks like that control.  If users are shooting for simplicity is important for Android to stay competitive by simplifying their user experience specifically personalized by the consumer.  Microsoft has similarly followed this approach in recent times.

Aesthetics, Hardware and Price

iPhones have a beautiful design.  Android phones can vary and can come as low as $100 even for a new phone.

Samsung Galaxy S8 is attractive like the iPhone 7.  That said, pricing and features are competitive between both those phones.

Android leaves behind Apple in hardware performance.  For less money, you can find Android phones with better specifications and features than iPhones. For example, Apple commercialized phones with HD screen when the market was full of Android phones with full HD screens and better panels.

As Android phones vary in manufacturer and quality, battery life is different for Android devices.  Alternatively, many Android phones give you the option to replace your battery, where Apple phones require you to get service from the Apple store.

Cameras

Cameras vary with Android phones, however Galaxy S8 and iPhone X give each other a good challenge in comparison.

The iPhone 7 has a 12-megapixel camera that boasts a wide f/1.8 aperture and built-in optical image stabilization (OIS).

Samsung’s Galaxy S8 also features a 12-megapixel shooter with OIS, and an even wider f1/.7 aperture, which means more light can reach the phone’s image sensor.

Galaxy S8 seems to have a superior camera in most situations, but the iPhone 7 isn’t far behind.

The iPhone 7’s front-facing camera turns out 7-megapixel shots, and has a respectable f/2.2 aperture.

Samsung offers higher resolution (8MP) selfies, and an exceptionally wide f/1.7 aperture.

iPhone 7 has waterproofing and a fingerprint scanner.

The Galaxy S8 is waterproof and has a fingerprint scanner too, but unlike the iPhone 7, it can be wirelessly charged, unlocked using an iris scanner, and still have a 3.5mm headphone jack .

Galaxy S8 base storage starts at 64GB, while Apple’s is 32GB.  And with Samsung there’s a Micro SD card slot.

Software and Compatibility

Any Apple buyer has to be aware that once you enter iOS, you are limited by Apple software unless you jailbreak.  iPhone software is proprietary.  Apple software is closed off and only Apple accessories are made to be 100% compatible in most cases.  iPhone users are also closed off in terms of compatibility with Amazon ebooks, Kindle apps, and Google Play movies.  Alternatively, Android users are closed off from podcasts, Apple iTunes, iOS messaging and Facetime.  When it comes to applications, Google applications work on Apple iPhone, where Apple’s proprietary software only works on Apple products.

Android is open source and more open to alternate applications.  If you prefer open systems to closed ones, it’s an important differentiator.  It offers a wide range of possibilities, much higher than its rival.

In terms of peripheral compatibility, Android has an advantage with using standard USB ports.  With iPhone, users are required to use the standard lightning port.

Voice Assistants

Android has Google Assistant, Apple has Siri.  Both are fast and respond effectively to the most basic commands.  However, one stands out above the other when tasks become more complex, and that is Google Assistant.  Android’s virtual mobile assistant has the ability to answer questions in more detail and has better functions to perform searches.

Google assistant integrates with calendar, maps, and other Google applications and offers AI capability that may offer suggestions such as pushing you to leave early due to bad traffic.

Google Assistant is also more skillful in answering questions than Apple Siri, which is still very basic.

Security

Although iPhone users often boast that iOS is virus-proof shielded software, the truth is that there is malware capable of penetrating any operating system as long as there are developers and hackers.

Android leaves the user more freedom to get away from the base system, such as downloading applications from the network without going through the Google store.  Obviously, this kind of freedom carries risks.

Updates

In this area, iPhones takes charge. When Apple releases a new update or patch, all compatible brand phones are updated.  In the case of Android, updates are reserved for a select few manufacturers, mostly higher end phones.

This difference occurs because in the case of iPhone every detail is under the control of Apple, while with Android, Google provides the base operating system and some programs, and it is up to the manufacturer of each phone to perform updates.

Alternatively, Apple may push updates that are buggy or have poor QA testing.

Cloud Integration

Both phones offer cloud integration, however iCloud offers a more limited service that traps users into paying almost as soon as you start using it’s resources.

Android is integrated with Google applications and services which offer more storage capacity.  Alternatively, you can use Google applications with iOS.

Conclusion

The debate between iOS and Android is a continuous battle between consumers.  As discussed, both iPhones and  Android phones have their good and bad points and at the end of the day, it’s all a matter of preference.  It all comes down to a matter of budget and what is most important to you.
