Renaming Virtual Machine files is not as easy as renaming the file itself. Of course the root folder can be renamed and readded and run without problems, but simply renaming vmx files and trying to run them will result in:
“Power On Virtual Machine” failed to complete
There are several articles on renaming vmx and associated Virtual Machine files, but the easiest way to do this, I’ve found, is to create a new virtual machine, run through the custom settings, and “Use an Existing Virtual Disk”, that being the Virtual Machine you are trying to rename.
