One key to remember is you have to do it right the first time. A badly designed or built studio can ruin your music. It can also defeat your goals.

Here are some tips to point you in the right direction.

  • The size of room is vital– if you go too small, you will not have enough room for the equipment or other instruments. Not to mention other musicians. Keep in mind that all rooms are not the same. Some are better for recording than others
  • Soundproofing– Unless you enjoy the sounds of life in the background of your music, it is best to keep the noise out. Soundproofing protects your style of sound. Also, it protects your relationships with your neighbors. Not every neighbor will enjoy hearing your genre of music.
  • The right flooring– carets work in living rooms. They are not good for acoustics and absorb high frequencies. You want to go with a good hardwood or other type of hard flooring surface.
  • Looking for good Acoustics– small rooms are not ideal for these. It may be cheaper if you go small, but you are also robbing yourself of good acoustics. You can always add in acoustic generating material to boost the quality of your sound.
  • Arrange your room– Part of owning your own recording studio is that you get to arrange it the way you want. There are several good templates you can use for inspiration. Or just arrange it the way you want. The choice is up to you.
  • Place your equipment– This is easy if you do not have a lot of equipment to bring into the room. With that said, you should have an idea of where you want to place your equipment before you design it.

A word of caution

You may not have the budget to go first class. Many people who look to record their own music do not have a lot of cash. They go very inexpensively when it comes to buying materials and equipment.

This can be a mistake. Cheap equipment may save you money initially. Yet it also can cost you. It can cost you a great sound or break down making your repair or replacement bill to high.

Another factor is that cheap materials and equipment can cause delays. Don’t go into debt or break your budget but don’t go too cheap either.

Technology tips

Technology has become very important in producing great music. If your equipment is good, then you sound good (so everyone hopes). Here is a list of some pieces of equipment that would be helpful in helping you generate your particular sound.

  • A good computer and monitor – you can always upgrade (find a good cheap computer monitor here -> cheap computer monitors)
  • Digital Audio Workstation & Audio Interface– to save money get the combination.
  • The right microphone(s)– you probably will need more than one. Choose the ones that work best for your purpose
  • Good headphones– there are two types: i) closed back for tracking duties and ii) open back for your mixing chores.
  • Good monitors– headphones do not provide the quality of sound that good monitors do.
  • Proper cables– make sure you buy extensions. They will save you trouble.
  • Hands free– Microphone stands are vital
  • Filters– you may want to stop the popping sound that comes with singing.

One other piece of equipment is some software that has ears. There is a difference between a musician’s ear and a sound engineer’s ear. You may need help listening to your music. It will also remove the bias when it comes to judging your own music.

Some Final Words

Building your own studio brings you a lot of freedom. But it will also bring you a lot of expense. Make sure you have the budget. The key is not to overspend right away for the best equipment. Work your way up so you don’t defeat yourself before you get started.

If you do it right the first time, you will save yourself headaches and expense.
