Three Secrets To Finding The Perfect Rugged Phone

If you have been shopping around for rugged phones, then you will no doubt have browsed through many different models during your search. The problem is actually picking one that will suit your needs – especially when you are running on a budget. You don’t want to plunk down a grand on a tough phone that really won’t need all the protection it has, but you also don’t want to end up with a cheap-o phone that is slow as molasses and can’t take the abuse you will inevitably subject it to.

So without further ado, here is a quick breakdown of the more important things you need to consider when shopping around for rugged phones:

Durability

Okay, so the main selling point of rugged phones is how rugged they can be. This typically means resistance to a) dirt and dust, b) water and similar liquids and c) physical impact. The problem here, however, is that not all of these tough phones are created equal. Even waterproof phones have varying degrees of waterproofing – along with the price tags to match.

The most reliable way to determine just how durable a potential phone can be is to look at its IP or Ingress Protection rating. Search for a rating that goes “IP123” or something similar. The first number – 1 in our example – measures the phone’s resistance to intrusion from physical objects like wires and dust. The second number – 2 in our example – covers the phone’s resistance to water pressure and total immersion. The third number – 3 in our example – measures the resistance against physical impact. If you see an X or a zero, then it means the device has no special protection against that particular factor.

The actual measurements of the IP rating system will take a whole article in itself, but here’s a good rule of thumb: higher numbers = better protection, and often higher price tag.

Performance

Okay, so you know just how much damage a damage-resistant phone can take before it fails. The next factor to consider is whether your rugged phone will be able to do what you need it to do.

Most rugged phones out there are bare-bones models: simply call and text, without digital cameras or Internet access. This simplicity is great for when you simply need a phone to communicate. If, however, you need expanded features like satellite Internet access or GPS-enabled mapping, then you will have to invest in tougher smartphone models. Special camping phones exist for heavy outdoor use, but these cost significantly more than their more basic counterparts.

Cost

If money is not a problem for you, then you can simply pick out the most high-end rugged phones that catch your fancy. If you are working on a budget, though, then you need to have a rough idea just how much you ought to spend for the model you have in mind.

Most waterproof, dustproof and shockproof phones hover between the 200 and 700-dollar mark. The lower-end of these models in the 200 to 300 USD range function like entry-level smartphones, but they are great for communications and running basic apps.  The 300 to 700 USD mark, however, starts to see significantly more processing speed and add-ons such as cameras and expanded battery capacity.

Then there are the designer phones, which can come up to a whopping 9,000 USD apiece. These models are for the brand and fashion-conscious, and they have all the aesthetic and operational appeal that you would expect from designer products.

Keep all these in mind and you will have a much easier time picking out the rugged phones that will get the job done while surviving the knocks you need it to survive!
