Windows 8: Browser/File Browser opens in Metro/App Mode instead of Desktop Mode

One of the major annoyances in Windows 8 that many tutorials fail to to mention is that their chrome/explorer browsers and “browse for folder” windows automatically open in app/metro mode in Windows 8.
When using chrome or explorer to upload a file, instead of getting the standard “browse for folder” window,

you get the Windows 8 Metro style browse for folder window, like so:

You will see yourself running into this when uploading a media file via browser through wordpress/joomla/drupal etc via the backend CMS for example.  If you want to upload an image directly from a URL, you will not be able to do it in Windows 8 metro.  Instead, you will have to download the file locally first before uploading.  To resolve this without doing that, set your browsers to open in desktop mode.

Open Chrome in Desktop

Open Internet Explorer in Desktop

Files that open in Metro/App mode may also experience the same issues. To get around this issue, change default program file associations.

How to Change File Associations in Windows 7 and Windows 8
From the Windows start screen type: default programs and select the Default Programs icon under results. The Default Programs windows will open on the desktop. You will have a couple of ways to change the default programs that open your files. The easiest is to click “Set your default programs.” Select the program you want to set as your default for your files.

  1. Was looking for a quick fix for this. The app design on Windows 8 is quite annoying.
